What is a Magnehelic Gauge?

A Magnehelic gauge (also commonly spelled Magnahelic gauge) is a precision differential pressure indicator used to measure the difference in pressure between two points. It is specifically designed for measuring low differential pressures of air and non-corrosive gases.

Unlike ordinary pressure gauges, the Magnehelic uses a patented frictionless movement — a diaphragm-and-magnet mechanism — that eliminates all pivots, bearings, and levers. This makes it highly accurate, maintenance-free, and extremely long-lasting even in continuous industrial use.

The term Magnehelic is often used generically for any differential pressure gauge of this type, though it was originally trademarked by Dwyer Instruments, USA. Equivalent instruments are also manufactured by Gallaxy, Sensocon, and Teren.

How Does a Magnehelic Gauge Work?

The Magnehelic gauge uses a unique frictionless diaphragm-magnet system — no pivots, no bearings, no fluid. Here's how it works step by step.

1

Pressure Applied

High and low pressure connections are made to the two ports on the back of the gauge. The pressure difference causes the internal diaphragm to flex.

2

Diaphragm Deflects

A precision-formed diaphragm responds proportionally to the differential pressure. Its movement is extremely sensitive — capable of detecting very small pressure differences.

3

Magnetic Coupling

The diaphragm movement is magnetically coupled to a pointer mechanism — with no mechanical linkage. This eliminates friction, wear, and hysteresis errors entirely.

4

Pointer Indicates

The pointer rotates proportionally across the calibrated scale, indicating the exact differential pressure reading with ±2% full scale accuracy. No power needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Magnehelic gauges — answered by our instrumentation experts.

A Magnehelic gauge (also called Magnahelic gauge) is a differential pressure indicator used to measure low differential pressure of air and non-corrosive gases. It uses a patented frictionless diaphragm-magnet movement — no pivots, no bearings, no fluid — offering high accuracy (±2% FS) and zero maintenance. Widely used in HVAC systems, cleanrooms, pharmaceutical facilities, and industrial filter monitoring.
There is no technical difference — Magnehelic is the correct original spelling (trademarked by Dwyer Instruments), while Magnahelic is simply a very common alternate spelling used by many people. Both refer to exactly the same type of differential pressure gauge. When searching online or asking a supplier, both spellings will give you the same product.
Magnehelic gauges are available in ranges from as low as 0–0.25 inches WC all the way up to 0–300 inches WC. Common ranges include 0–0.5, 0–1, 0–2, 0–5, 0–10, 0–25, 0–50, 0–100 inches WC. They are also available in Pa, mbar, and mmWC units, as well as bi-directional (±) ranges. IJ Instruments stocks the most popular ranges and can source any range from our brands.
Dwyer is the original inventor and is the premium choice for critical applications like pharmaceutical cleanrooms where documentation and brand recognition matter. Gallaxy and Sensocon are high-quality Indian brands widely used across Indian industries — they offer excellent performance at a more economical price point. Teren is a cost-effective option for standard HVAC and general industrial use. We help you choose the right brand based on your application, accuracy requirement, and budget.
No — a standard Magnehelic gauge is completely passive and requires no electrical power. It works purely on the mechanical principle of diaphragm deflection and magnetic coupling. This makes it ideal for field installations where power is not available. However, versions with optional limit switches or transmitter outputs do require power for those electrical functions.
The most common accessories are: static pressure tips or pitot tubes (for duct pressure measurement), flexible tubing to connect the ports to the tapping points, and panel mounting rings or surface mounting brackets. For alarm functionality, optional limit switches can be added. For outdoor or harsh environment installations, weatherproof enclosures are available. IJ Instruments can supply all accessories together with the gauge.
