A dew point transmitter measures the moisture content of a gas by continuously monitoring the temperature at which water vapour begins to condense — critical for compressed air, process gas and hazardous-area applications where excess moisture causes corrosion, freezing, contamination or product quality failures. IJ Instruments supplies dew point transmitters covering -110°C to +20°C dew point, with intrinsically safe versions for hazardous areas and a range of process connections to suit new and retrofit installations.
Understanding Dew Point Measurement
Dew point is the temperature at which air or gas becomes saturated with water vapour and condensation begins to form. A dew point transmitter measures this continuously and outputs a proportional 4–20mA signal, letting you monitor gas dryness in real time rather than relying on periodic spot checks.
A ceramic metal-oxide sensor changes its electrical impedance as moisture is absorbed and released, giving a stable, repeatable measurement that holds calibration over the sensor's working life — more robust than capacitive polymer sensors in dirty or high-pressure gas streams.
Moisture in compressed air or process gas causes pipe corrosion, freezing in cold lines, contamination of pneumatic instruments, and quality failures in moisture-sensitive processes — continuous dew point monitoring catches dryer failures before they become production problems.
The same transmitter can output dew point temperature (°Cdp) or moisture content (ppmV) — useful when your process specification is written in parts-per-million rather than temperature terms.
Product Range
Three connection variants of the Easidew dew-point transmitter range from Michell Instruments — sharing the same sensing technology and performance, differing in process and electrical connection to suit your installation.
The standard Easidew transmitter with 5/8" UNF process connection and MiniDIN 43650 electrical connector — a rugged, impedance-based dew point transmitter for continuous measurement in compressed air or process gas.
Same Easidew sensing performance in a 3/4" UNF process connection variant — a direct fit for installations standardized on 3/4" UNF ports or where a larger thread engagement is preferred.
M12 5-pin electrical connector variant with a choice of G1/2" BSP, 3/4" UNF or 5/8" UNF process connection. Selecting the M12 5-pin connector also enables Modbus RTU over RS485 output alongside 4–20mA.
The Easidew transmitter range is manufactured by Michell Instruments (part of the Process Sensing Technologies group) using ceramic metal-oxide moisture sensing technology, with high-volume manufacturing and calibration traceable to NPL and NIST ISO 17025 standards. FAQs
Dew point is the temperature at which water vapour in the air begins to condense. In compressed air systems, a high dew point means more moisture is present, which can cause pipe corrosion, freezing in cold lines, and damage to pneumatic instruments and valves — continuous dew point monitoring lets you catch dryer failures before they cause downstream problems.
Both describe the same moisture content, just in different units — dew point in °C or °F, and ppmV as parts-per-million by volume. The same transmitter can be configured to output either, useful when your process specification is written in one unit but your control system expects the other.
If the transmitter will be installed in a classified hazardous area (Zone 0/1 or Class I Division 1, for example around flammable gas processing), you'll need an I.S. certified version with ATEX, IECEx or cQPSus approval as applicable to your region — tell us your area classification and we'll confirm the right certification.
It depends on your existing piping and sample system — 5/8" UNF and 3/4" UNF are common threaded options, while the M12 variant additionally offers G1/2" BSP and adds a Modbus RTU communication option. Share your installation details for a recommendation.
