How Does a Vibrating Fork Level Switch Work?

Based on the piezoelectric tuning fork principle — simple, reliable, and universally applicable to all liquids without any calibration.

Fork Vibrates in Air

Piezoelectric crystals inside the fork are excited by the electronics, causing the two tines to vibrate at their natural resonance frequency (typically ~1400 Hz) in free air.

Liquid Immersion

When the liquid level rises and immerses the fork tines, the vibration frequency drops due to the mass loading effect of the liquid density on the fork.

Frequency Shift Detected

The onboard electronics continuously monitor the fork vibration frequency. The frequency shift caused by liquid contact is detected instantly within 1 second.

Switching Output

A relay or transistor switching output is triggered — activating alarms, stopping pumps, or signalling the PLC/DCS. LED indicators show status at a glance.

A vibrating fork level switch (also called tuning fork level switch or vibronic level switch) is a point level detection instrument. It uses piezoelectric crystals to vibrate a fork at its natural resonance frequency. When the fork is immersed in liquid, the vibration frequency drops due to liquid density. This frequency shift is detected by electronics and triggers a switching output for alarms or control. Used for high level alarm, low level alarm, overflow protection, dry run protection and pump control in tanks and pipelines.

Yes. The standard version handles up to 80°C. The T2 (high temperature) option — with heat sinks and extensions — extends the process temperature range to 150°C.
